Refusing to sell for 10 million VND, fishermen release rare turtles back into the wild

Refusing to sell the sea turtle for 10 million VND, Mr. Truong released the sea turtle back into the wild with the hope of preserving the rare species.

Mr. Bui Tuan Son, Director of the Ha Tinh Fishing Port Management Board, said that on the afternoon of March 28, Mr. Nguyen Van Truong (residing in Thach Bang commune, Loc Ha, Ha Tinh) and the authorities hadrelease rare turtles into the sea.

Two nights ago, while fishing in the fishing grounds of Thach Kim commune (Loc Ha), 15-20 nautical miles from shore, Mr. Truong discovered a turtle stuck in the net. The turtle weighed 80 kg, was 1 meter long, 60 cm wide, had a yellow body, and many dark brown areas on its shell.

Mr. Truong said that when he heard about the turtle being caught, a trader came to buy it for 10 million VND, but he refused. "Turtles are rare animals, I want to release them back into the sea to help preserve them," he explained.

According to authorities, sea turtles are in the endangered group on the list of species threatened with extinction, and all acts of buying, selling, and transporting are strictly prohibited.
