South Korea deploys warship to Ghana after crew members are kidnapped

South Korea deployed an anti-piracy ship off the coast of Ghana after three of its sailors were kidnapped by pirates.

Pirates boarded the Marine 711 on March 26, which was carrying 40 Ghanaians and three South Korean crew members. The pirates took three South Koreans and escaped by speedboat, their whereabouts unknown.

The 500-ton ship registered in Ghana later docked in Ghana.

The South Korean military said the pirates were Nigerian, according toYonhap.Munmu the Great, a South Korean warship that has been participating in anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, has been deployed to nearby waters.

"We are working closely with countries in the region such asGhana, Nigeria, Togo and Benin as well as the United States and the European Union to determine the whereabouts of their citizens and ensure their release," the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced last night.

The pirates have not yet demanded ransom in exchange for the release of the crew.
