A millstone-shaped coral weighing several tons was recently found in Ly Son (Quang Ngai) and has great significance to the scientific community.

During the survey process to prepare documents for establishing Ly Son Geopark, experts from the Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources discovered coral fossils, which are considered a unique geological site in Vietnam.

"This type of coral fossil does not exist in the world," said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Nam, a member of the research team, adding that they were found near Hang Cau (An Hai commune).

The fossil weighs up to tons, and is 2 meters or more in diameter. It resembles a mill with eye-catching concentric rings that people in the North often use.

The discovery helps scientists examine the paleoenvironmental history and opens up new research directions on the coral formation process. This is also an important basis in the application for recognition of Ly Son Geopark.

"We hope the coral fossils can be rearranged and become a tourist attraction," said Mr. Nam.
