Trump's homeland security adviser suddenly resigns

The White House today announced that Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert has resigned, just two days after the decision to send National Guard troops to the border with Mexico. This is considered surprising news, especially when US President Donald Trump is pushing the issue of border security and Mr. Bossert is very trusted.CNBCreport

"The President expressed his gratitude for Tom's efforts to keep our country safe. Tom has led efforts to counter the threat of terrorism, strengthen our cyber defenses, and respond to a series of natural disasters. President Trump thanks Tom for his service and wishes him well," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

The reason for Bossert’s resignation was not disclosed, but unnamed White House officials said it was related to the appointment of National Security Adviser John Bolton, a hardliner on foreign policy. Some sources said Bossert left the position at Bolton’s request, while the White House said it was unaware of any differences between the two.

Tom Bossert is President Trump’s first Homeland Security Advisor, having served in the position since Trump took office. He was appointed Deputy Homeland Security Advisor under President George W. Bush and co-created the National Strategy for Homeland Security in 2007.

Prior to that, Bossert held various roles in the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the House of Representatives. He was also director of the Office of Infrastructure Protection, which oversaw security at critical U.S. facilities, for two years under President Bush.
