Google is redesigning Gmail
Several new features and design changes will be rolled out to Gmail by Google in the coming weeks.
According toThe Verge, the redesigned Gmail web interface will feature first-time features like Smart Reply and the Snooze function that temporarily deletes emails from your inbox for a period of time. But the biggest change that most people will notice is the design.
Gmail is getting a refresh to be more mobile-friendly. |
A recently leaked image via Imgur shows what appears to be a radical overhaul of the Gmail interface. Google is planning to bring Material Design, a design style used on Android versions, to Gmail, with simpler and more intuitive icons, emphasizing bold elements.
The new design comes in three different layout options: Default, Comfort, and Compact. Default highlights attachments and details using bright colors, Comfort keeps them hidden to reduce visual clutter, and Compact looks closer to the current Gmail layout with a focus on being compact to increase the amount of messages and emails you can see on a single page.
Users also have the option on the right sidebar to interact with Google Keep or Google Calendar. The integration of these two products will bring a close connection, as well as help users manage and organize their work or meeting schedules more easily.
At the bottom of the email, users can also see the smart reply feature that Google first introduced with the Inbox app. Smart reply provides suggestions for quick one-time replies to simple emails. However, it is not clear how this feature will be used.
Google has been aggressively revamping its iconic web apps over the past year. The first was Google Calendar, which received an update to help users save time. The new Gmail beta will be released to the public in the coming weeks. In a statement toGizmodo"We're working on some big updates to Gmail. It's taking a little longer to compose, so we can't share anything right now. We'll let you know when you can hit Send," a Google spokesperson said.
