The United States announced the production of "directed energy" weapons.
Progress in the application of "directed energy" technology in the defense sector has reached a turning point. The new head of Lockheed Martin's Center for Advanced Technology, Nelson Pedreiro, told this to the Space News portal.
According to him, the American corporation has created a prototype laser weapon that can be used to protect military bases from unmanned aerial vehicles. Mr. Pedreiro also noted that last year Lockheed Martin demonstrated the operation of the 30-kilowatt ATHENA system at a US military base in New Mexico.

"The system hits airborne targets in flight, causing structural damage and loss of control over them. Lasers are also being developed for the Missile Defense Agency as a very powerful weapon to shoot down enemy ballistic missiles in flight," — the engineer added.
