Young man sentenced to 2 years in prison for setting his own house on fire.
(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of April 24, the People's Court of Yen Thanh District (Nghe An) publicly tried a case of deliberately setting fire to a house and intentionally damaging property.
According to the case file:At approximately 6:30 PM on January 20, 2018, Pham Van Su, born in 1978, residing in Hamlet 6, Van Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, after returning home from drinking alcohol, had a heated argument with his father, Pham Van Thu, and his younger brother, Pham Van Nghia.
Mr. Thu hit Su a few times with a broom he was sweeping the house with, after which Su went to bed. Due to long-standing family grievances, at around 8 PM that same day, Su took a plastic bucket and rode his motorbike to the Nghe Tinh gas station in Block 1, Yen Thanh town, to buy 200,000 VND worth of gasoline with the intention of burning down his family's house and property in Hamlet 6, Van Thanh commune.
When Sự returned home after buying gasoline, he found everyone gone except for Sang (Sự's son) at home. Sự told Sang to go play at the intersection near their house.After that, Sự took a plastic container, poured gasoline into the house, then went out to the porch, took some clothes that were drying, put them on the seat of his younger brother Phạm Văn Nghĩa's ZYM motorcycle and on his own Honda Cub 50 motorcycle, poured gasoline on them and set them on fire.
When the fire broke out, some residents noticed and shouted for help to put it out. As a result, one room of the main three-room house belonging to Su's family was burned, while the three-room annex with a tiled roof was almost completely destroyed; two motorbikes and some household items were also damaged.
Following the incident, at 9:15 PM on the same day, Pham Van Su surrendered to the Van Thanh Commune Police Station and confessed to his illegal actions. On January 25, 2018, the Yen Thanh District Asset Valuation Council concluded that the total value of the damaged property was over 11 million VND.
Applying the provisions of Point d, Clause 2, Article 178 of the Penal Code, the Yen Thanh District People's Court sentenced Pham Van Su to 2 years imprisonment for the crime of "Intentionally damaging property"..
