“Chairman Kim, for the first time in our history, you have crossed the military demarcation line,” Mr. Moon told Mr. Kim and the North Korean delegation at the start of the talks. “This military demarcation line is no longer a symbol of division but a symbol of peace,” he stressed.
“I would like to express my gratitude for Chairman Kim's courageous and bold decision to arrange our meeting,” the South Korean leader said.
Mr. Moon also responded to Mr. Kim's assertion that their meeting was extremely important and that expectations placed on the two leaders were very high.
“I believe our meeting is extremely important for all of us and that of course means there is a heavy burden on our shoulders,” Mr. Moon said.
The South Korean president then said that after talking for a short time, he felt he could spend the whole day talking with the North Korean leader.
“We have not been able to communicate for the past seven decades, so I think we can talk all day today,” Moon said, drawing laughter from Mr. Kim.
