The South Korean presidential office said on April 29 that leader Kim Jong-un affirmed this during a summit with President Moon Jae-in on April 27 at Panmunjom.

According to information from the South Korean presidential office, quoted by Kyodo News, President Moon conveyed the proposal of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, after which leader Kim responded that North Korea was ready to talk.

On the morning of April 29, Mr. Abe also had a phone call with Mr. Moon and thanked the Korean leader for making the proposal.

The issues raised by Japan for dialogue with North Korea include bilateral relations between the two countries and most importantly, resolving the issue of abductions of Japanese citizens, which has lasted for the past four decades.

Prime Minister Abe said that resolving the issue of abducted citizens is a priority for the Japanese government.

The comments came after a clear sign of diplomatic openness from North Korea.

Kim Jong-un has stepped onto the international stage with two notable trips to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. In late May or early June, Kim is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump.

Regarding the inter-Korean summit, Mr. Moon personally called Mr. Abe and Mr. Trump to announce important results related to the goal of denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.

Both the US and Japan affirmed that they will cooperate closely with South Korea to turn North Korea's denuclearization commitment into reality through concrete actions.
