(Baonghean.vn) - More than 10 hectares of protective forest along the Mo River have been cut down by many households in Quynh Thanh Commune, Quynh Luu District to dig shrimp ponds. The incident occurred in 2000, but up to now, local authorities have not taken any measures to prevent or handle it.

The vast green protective mangrove forests along the Mo River, Quynh Thanh Commune (Quynh Luu) are a solid green shield to protect against storms, high tides, protect the sea dyke, limit erosion and protect the ecological environment. However, the forests have now been cut down by people to dig ponds for shrimp farming.

In particular, the mangrove forest area through Hamlet 12, Quynh Thanh Commune has been dug up and plowed. After destroying the forest, households used excavators to fill in the ponds and then built banks to raise shrimp and crabs.

Many households encroach on large areas of forest to raise shrimp, such as Mr. Tran Tin's household in hamlet 12, who dug and filled 1,343 m2;Mr. Ho Dinh Luan's household in hamlet 12 dug and filled 4,720 m2;Mr. Phan Que's household in hamlet 7 dug and filled 15,000 m2(since 2009)... Many households have also built houses and embankments for shrimp farming ponds on protected forest land.

Mr. Ho Xuan Xuyen - Chairman of Quynh Thanh Commune People's Committee admitted: Since 2000, there have been 13 households encroaching on over 10 hectares of protective forest area to raise shrimp. The current difficulty is that households have invested 200 - 300 million VND in shrimp ponds, so it is very difficult to clear them.

According to Mr. Tran Huy Dat - Head of Planning and Technical Department, Quynh Luu Protective Forest Management Board, regarding the mangrove forest area, the unit has only been assigned a mangrove forest map but has not been assigned land or forest yet, so it is difficult to manage.

The problem now is that the Quynh Luu district government needs to quickly find a solution to prevent this situation. Otherwise, at this rate, the protective forests along the rivers and coasts in Quynh Luu will easily disappear in a short time./.
