Coach Toshiya Miura's Ho Chi Minh City Club received two heavy penalties after playing rough football with SLNA in the 1/8 round of the 2018 National Cup on April 29.

Specifically, Sam Ngoc Duc was fined 20 million VND and suspended for 4 matches for fouling Phan Van Duc, Truong Dinh Luat was fined 15 million VND and banned for 3 matches for fouling Olaha. Both Ngoc Duc and Dinh Luat are players from Nghe An.

The victory of that match belonged to SLNA after goals from Tuan Tai and Xuan Manh. But the issue that received the most attention was the violent playing style of the away team.

The tension peaked in the 70th minute when Sam Ngoc Duc tackled Phan Van Duc with his sole, causing him to lie on the ground in pain. The referee immediately gave Ngoc Duc a second yellow card and sent him off the field. That was just one of many brutal tackles by TP.HCM against SLNA in this match. Coach Miura's team also received 3 other yellow cards.

After the match, coach Nguyen Duc Thang and the SLNA team were very upset. Mr. Thang and center back Que Ngoc Hai raised their voices at Dinh Luat and almost got into a fight.

Sharing in the press conference room, Mr. Thang was indignant: “Having gone through the period of being a player, I cannot accept malicious tackles. Ho Chi Minh City abandoned human football, causing Olaha to bleed from the knee or Van Duc to lie on the field in pain. The organizing committee should reconsider Ho Chi Minh City's way of playing. I have never encouraged students to play football so roughly and intentionally destroy other people's rice pots like that.”

In addition to the penalties for Ho Chi Minh City, the National Cup round of 16 also had 3 other penalties: Xuan Thanh (Thanh Hoa) was banned for 2 matches for a dangerous foul on the National Anthem (Long An), Vo Huy Toan and Do Merlo (Da Nang) were warned for reacting to the referee, and the Thanh Hoa stadium organizers were fined 5 million because an ambulance was not always on the field.
