Stealing a car worth 8 billion VND, amateur actor sentenced to 14 years in prison

Seeing the driver leave the car and go into a roadside store, Linh sneaked in and drove away, causing a series of accidents for 10km while fleeing.

On May 4, Hanoi People's Court opened the first instance trial.Nguyen Duy Linh (34 years old, from Yen Bai) for the crime of Theft of property under Article 173, Penal Code 2015.

According to the prosecution, late on April 28, 2017, Linh walked past a building on Nguyen Trai Street (Thanh Xuan District) and saw a Range Rover worth 8 billion VND parked on the side of the road.

Not long after that, on Tay Son street (Dong Da district), he happened to see this car stopped on the side of the road, the driver went into a store to buy medicine, Linh looked into the car; he did not see anyone inside, the car was still running, he immediately drove away.

Hearing the car owner's cries, the police and some people gave chase.Linh drove around the streets, throwing some belongings on the car, including an iPhone 7, to attract people to block the road.

During the 10 km escape, Linh caused a series of accidents until the car died.

In court, Linhdeclarevery interested in politics, kWhen he saw the car, he felt the need to take it on a peace mission. When he was arrested, Linh explained to the people around him thatnot stealing but on duty because "the next day there will be war".

"No one believed what the defendant said, thinking that the defendant was crazy and using crystal meth. But as a former CEO of a large corporation and participating in many TV dramas, the defendant could not have stolen any property for any reason," Linh stated.

"The defendant made a mistake, but given the peaceful circumstances, any Vietnamese person would have done the same as me," Linh said, adding that he did not care about the sentence, but only wanted people to understand what he did.

"Does the defendant have any mental illness?", the judge asked. "The defendant has always been normal," Linh replied.

After nearly two hours of interrogation and case documents, it was determined that Linh saw the car many times and had the intention to steal it when he saw the owner was careless.The court sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
