The re-establishment of the large fleet unit was announced at the naval base in Norfolk on May 4.

"The Second Fleet will conduct operations and administrative management with ships, aircraft and ground forces on the East Coast (of the United States) and in the North Atlantic," - the Fleet announced.

"Our new national military strategy makes it clear that we are back in the era of great power competition, the number of challenges facing us is increasing, the situation is more complex. Therefore, we are re-establishing the Second Fleet to respond to these challenges, especially in the North Atlantic," - US Navy Admiral John Richardson commented.

The Second Fleet of the United States Navy existed from 1950 to 2011 and was responsible for the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic to the Caribbean Sea.
