Placing his right hand on the Constitution of the Russian Federation, Mr. Putin read the oath of office as President: "I swear that while exercising the powers of the President of the Russian Federation, I will respect and protect the rights and freedoms of man and citizen, observe and protect the Constitution of the Russian Federation, protect the sovereignty, independence, security and unity of the state, and faithfully serve the people."

The Constitution used for the oath of office was specially created for the inauguration of the President of Russia in 1996 and has been used since then in all presidential inaugurations.

The text of the oath as well as the status of the President are regulated by Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

Immediately after Mr. Putin finished reading the oath, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin announced that President-elect of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin had officially become President of the Russian Federation for the next 6-year term.

The inauguration ceremony of President-elect Putin was attended by 6,000 guests, including members of the Government, the State Duma (Lower House) and the Federation Council (Upper House), the Constitutional Court, representatives of President-elect Putin's election campaign, heads of diplomatic missions, and representatives of youth and religious organizations.

In the presidential election last March, he won a record 76.7% of the vote. In 2000, the figure was 52.94%, in 2004 it was 71.31% and in 2012 it was 63.6%.

According to the Constitution, after taking office on May 7, Mr. Putin will exercise the duties of President for 6 years, that is, until May 7, 2024.

The Russian Government, according to the Constitution, shall resign after the President-elect takes office, but shall continue to perform its duties until a new Government is formed.

After the inauguration, President Putin will nominate a Prime Minister and submit the nomination to the State Duma. After the State Duma approves the Prime Minister's candidate, the Prime Minister will submit to the President a proposal on the composition of the Government within a week. After the President approves, the new Government will begin its work.

President-elect Putin left his office for the first time in a black Russian-made limousine of the Kortez series to the Grand Kremlin Palace to be sworn in. He usually uses a Mercedes for his previous inaugurations. Security services said the car had passed all the necessary checks to ensure the security of the head of state.
