(Baonghean.vn) - To proactively prevent floods and storms in 2018, leaders of Quynh Luu district inspected key flood and storm prevention projects in the coastal communes of Quynh Long, Quynh Tho, Son Hai, and Tien Thuy.

The delegation inspected a number of projects such as: Quynh Tho sea dyke; Son Hai commune river estuary dyke; Lach Thoi storm shelter; Quynh Long sea dyke; dyke No. 6 and Lach Quen port, Tien Thuy commune...

The Quynh Tho sea dike was built in 2001 and upgraded in 2007, but the design can only withstand a level 10 storm. Recently, due to changes in the flow, the entire casuarina forest blocking the waves outside the dike, which is more than 200 m wide, was uprooted by water for a distance of more than 1.5 km.

This sea dike is experiencing strong seawater erosion. Therefore, to cope with storms and floods, Chairman of Quynh Luu District People's Committee - Mr. Hoang Danh Lai directed Quynh Tho Commune to plan to plant more casuarina trees to block waves. At the same time, the locality needs to mobilize people to periodically clean and collect waste in the sea dike area to ensure the environment.

The project of the Son Hai estuary embankment and Lach Thoi storm shelter, constructed by Minh Quang Company, has so far dredged 4.3 km, installed 54 buoys; currently there are about 300m at the foot of Son Tho bridge that have not been dredged yet.

Regarding the Quynh Long sea dike, the delegation inspected and supervised two key areas including Sam Sam beach, Dai Bac village and Cong Hoa village dike. Currently, to build a breakwater for these two areas requires a huge amount of capital. Therefore, the district is planning to request funding from higher levels.

However, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Luu district requested the locality to proactively grasp information and develop timely response plans when storms occur; build up land to create temporary embankments, and add sandbags outside the shore to block waves when the sea level rises.

Through inspection of fire prevention and fighting work at Lach Quen, it was found that the Port Management Board and local authorities have not paid attention to this work; on-site fire fighting tools and equipment are still lacking. Photo: Thanh Toan

For the embankment project No. 6 and Lach Quen fishing port, the project is constructed by Hong Dao Company, with a total investment of more than 55 billion VND with a length of 1.1km, a road surface width of 6m. Up to now, the project progress has been completed about 60%, the riverside roof frame has been built, the ditch has been built, the embankment has been filled with 500m of soil, and the road surface is still being concreted.

Through the inspection, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Luu district emphasized that the completion of this project will contribute to ensuring a place to anchor and avoid storms for dozens of vessels, a place for fishermen to transport seafood as well as provide services at sea. Therefore, the construction unit needs to pay attention to speeding up the progress to ensure that vessels have a place to anchor during the upcoming storm season.

In addition to inspecting flood and storm prevention works, the delegation inspected fire prevention work in the boat mooring area and gas stations at Lach Quen fishing port and Giat market commercial center.
