According to AP, on May 10, the leader of the Philippine Navy said that the country's first missile-equipped attack ships will be launched in about 3 months, most likely to participate in counter-insurgency operations, protect territorial waters and deter enemies.

Speaking at a press conference, Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said the Philippine Navy also plans to purchase more torpedoes and submarines under a military modernization program to strengthen national security and fight piracy and other cross-border crimes.

In addition, Mr. Empedrad noted that Israeli-made short-range missile systems have been deployed on three multi-role attack ships that the Philippines previously purchased.
