According to AP, on May 10, the leader of the Philippine Navy said that the country's first missile-equipped attack ships will be launched in about 3 months, most likely to participate in anti-insurgency operations, protect territorial waters and deter enemies.

Speaking at a press conference, Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said the Philippine Navy also plans to purchase more torpedoes and submarines under a military modernization program to strengthen national security and fight against piracy and cross-border crimes.

Additionally, Mr. Empedrad noted that Israeli-made short-range missile systems have been deployed on three multi-role attack ships that the Philippines previously acquired.

Mr. Empedrad emphasized that the Philippine Navy is finalizing plans to deploy these ships, with expected deployment locations possibly including the western province of Palawan and the southern Zamboanga Peninsula./.
