Currently, there are about 1,600 Professors and 10,000 Associate Professors nationwide, many of whom have passed away or retired. However, the number of Professors and Associate Professors still doing research is only about 1/4.

This information was shared by Professor Tran Van Nhung - General Secretary of the State Council of Professors at the recent awarding ceremony of the titles of Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Water Resources.

Professor Tran Van Nhung added that currently, there are about 1,600 Professors and 10,000 Associate Professors nationwide, many of whom have passed away or retired.

Therefore, in reality, the number of Professors and Associate Professors still doing research accounts for about 1/4. Of the 1,600 Professors, only about 200 - 300 Professors are still working and doing research.

Professor Nhung compared, according to average calculations per 10,000 people, the number of Chinese professors is 8 times more than ours, not to mention the quality. In Germany, this number is 3 times more than ours.

"To improve the quality of science, in the coming time, we need to add the most elite people to the team" - Professor Tran Van Nhung said.

Recently, public opinion has debated and proposed that there should be regulations on the appointment time for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor in Vietnam, because many people when reaching these titles no longer do research activities contributing to science.

Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong - Vice President of the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education said that Professors are those who carry out the task of training for the country, and are the most qualified teachers in a certain field. If they no longer train or teach, Professors should give their titles to others. When they are no longer able to participate in training and research, Prof. Dong will also return this title.
