Japan expands garlic production project in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of May 14, the Provincial People's Committee had a meeting with JICA in Vietnam and Farmer's Co-op (FC) - Kagawa Prefecture, Japan to discuss plans to continue implementing the project to support the production of Japanese garlic varieties in Ky Son, Nghe An.

Attending the meeting were Mr. Ishikawa - Agricultural Advisor of JICA in Vietnam, Mr. Kondo Takashi - Director of Farmer's Co-op Company, Kagawa province, Japan.

On the side of Nghe An province, there were comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and leaders of provincial departments, branches and sectors.

Since 2013, after conducting a feasibility survey, the Project to support the production of Japanese white garlic in Nghe An, supported by JICA and implemented in cooperation with Farmer's Co-op, has been tested with nearly 500 plants on an area of ​​1,200 m2at Youth Volunteer Team 10 and 1 household of Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district.

The pilot model has yielded an average harvest weight of 100g/bulb, with a bulb diameter of 5 - 7.5 cm (4 times larger than regular garlic).

Through survey, inspection, and quality and productivity indicators of the product, Japanese experts highly appreciated the effectiveness of the white garlic growing model on Ky Son land; At the same time, they affirmed that this product fully meets the standards for export to the Japanese market.

Through the experimental planting model, Japanese experts also determined the appropriate planting season, shortened planting time, and the development of pests and diseases to proactively take preventive measures.

At the meeting, the representative of Farmer's Co-op Company hopes to receive support from Vietnam and Nghe An in the coming time so that the project can implement phase 2 by expanding the planting area of ​​garlic varieties imported from Japan; at the same time, surveying the market for sustainable product consumption.

Affirming that Ky Son can become a region specializing in producing clean, high-quality agricultural products, after the success of this project, the Company will continue to survey and implement other crop projects in the area...

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee affirmed that the success of the project will contribute to reducing the province's long-standing garlic import quota; at the same time, he hoped that JICA would continue to support the project to expand its scope.

The province pledged to direct specialized agencies, Ky Son district, and the Provincial Youth Union to coordinate so that the project can be effectively implemented in the coming time.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the company to work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to resolve issues related to legal procedures, creating favorable conditions for the project to export and import garlic products to the Japanese market; at the same time, he hoped that Farmer's Co-op (FC) would continue to conduct research and surveys to implement other crop projects such as persimmons, strawberries, clean vegetables and fruits with high productivity and good quality on Ky Son land in the coming time./.
