(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, Anh Son farmers are focusing on harvesting sticky corn grown on alluvial land. In recent years, this rustic, simple gift from the countryside has brought in a significant source of income for the people.

In the glutinous corn field in village 1, Tuong Son commune, from early morning people were bustling to the fields to harvest and sell to traders. As one of the households growing the most corn in the village, Ms. Le Thi Oanh shared: Her family has been growing glutinous corn for more than 5 years now, this glutinous corn crop, her family planted more than 6 sao, sown and divided into 4-5 batches 10-15 days apart to facilitate harvesting and always have corn to supply the market.

After 70 days of care, the corn has now been harvested. The reason her family sticks with perennial sticky corn is because this is a high-yielding plant, and after harvesting, the family can also use the stems and leaves as animal feed.

In addition to importing for traders, Ms. Oanh and her neighbors also boil sticky corn to sell to passersby along Highway 7. On average, each sao of sticky corn yields 1,500 - 2,000 ears, with the current price of 2,000 VND/ear, after deducting expenses, Ms. Oanh's family earns a profit of 3 million VND/sao.

With an area of 3 sao including alluvial land and land on the side, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family in village 1, Tuong Son commune has switched to growing sticky corn. Ms. Huong said: Sticky corn grown in this area is both sticky and has a sweet aroma, so it is favored by markets inside and outside the district. Therefore, when the harvest season comes, traders from everywhere come to the fields to buy. On average, her family can sell 300 - 400 corn ears per day. Ms. Huong estimates that if she sells all the corn area this season, she can earn nearly 10 million VND, higher than the crops her family has grown before.

From the effectiveness of waxy corn, in recent years many farmers in Anh Son district have boldly converted some areas of low-efficiency alluvial land, field land, and mixed garden land to grow waxy corn. This model is bringing quite high economic efficiency to farmers.

Currently, the whole Anh Son district has nearly 30 hectares of waxy corn, mainly concentrated in the communes of Cam Son, Tuong Son, Vinh Son, Duc Son, Phuc Son, and Tao Son. This is a short-term crop with high productivity and is less susceptible to pests and diseases. The average yield is from 1,500 to 2,000 ears/sao and can be grown 3 crops/year. In particular, waxy corn in Anh Son has the characteristics of small cobs, ivory white color, full of milk, fragrant, and more sticky than other types of corn, so it is very popular with customers.

Currently, with the selling price from 2,000 VND/corn, after deducting expenses, farmers earn 60 million VND/ha. In the coming time, Anh Son district will continue to propagate and mobilize farmers to expand the planting area on ineffective land to increase crops, increase productivity and income on the same unit of cultivated land.
