When some people came to see the situation, they discovered Mr. Bang and his wife, Ms. Thanh (37 years old), gasping for breath in the bedroom with flames burning on many objects, the room reeked of gasoline.
When taken to the emergency room by local people, Ms. Thanh died due to severe burns; Mr. Bang is also in critical condition due to burns and has been transferred to the National Institute of Burns in Hanoi for treatment.
An official from Cam Quan commune said that the incident happened during the rice harvest season, and the neighbors were all in the fields so they arrived late at the scene and could not provide timely rescue. When the fire broke out, the couple's two sons (the first born in 2002, the second born in 2004) were herding buffalo in the fields.
Captain Le Viet Duong - Deputy Chief of Cam Xuyen District Police said that the initial assessment of the investigation agency was that the cause of the fire was not due to an electrical short circuit. At the scene, the police seized part of a plastic can that had previously contained gasoline.
The police are continuing to investigate and clarify the case.
