British rescue company Britannia has compiled 64 of the most common warning light symbols on car dashboards. Of these, only 12 light symbols are regularly present on all car models.

The number of warning signs is increasing in new car models, notably the Mercedes E class with 41/64 warning lights and some other familiar car models in Vietnam such as Toyota Yaris and Audi A3 28/64, Ford Fiesta 25/64 and BMW Series 3 with 21/64.

Britannia surveyed 2,018 drivers in the UK and found some surprising results. 98% of drivers could not understand all 64 symbols, with more than half (52%) only correctly understanding 16 of the 64. A quarter of drivers had at least one or more warning signs flashing while driving that they had no idea what was happening, most commonly warnings related to the engine, battery or oil warnings. Almost half (48%) of drivers did not even recognise the brake warning light and more than a third (35%) could not understand the airbag warning, with 27% mistaking it for a seatbelt warning.

Cars in Vietnam currently have an average of 9-12 common symbols of warning lights on the dashboard. Readers can refer to the table below for all symbols on the dashboard.
