Nghi Loc: 2,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice crops lack water for production.
(Baonghean.vn) - The prolonged intense heat over the past few days has left 2,500 hectares of rice fields in Nghi Loc district (Nghe An province) without water for land preparation and planting of the summer-autumn rice crop.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang An, residing in Hamlet 14, Nghi Van Commune, Nghi Loc District, shared: "My family cultivates 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of rice, but 100% of the area is dry and barren due to the depleted reservoir, leaving no water for plowing and planting. We hope for rain in the coming time so we can prepare the land and switch to growing other crops."
Mr. Tran Van Sao, Chairman of the Nghi Van Commune People's Committee, said: "Nghi Van planted over 550 hectares of rice during the summer-autumn season, but the difficulty lies in the lack of a natural water source from the canal leading to Do Luong and the absence of a pumping station. Currently, only 5 out of 20 reservoirs still have water at 30-40% of their capacity. The commune can only plant 200 out of 550 hectares, mainly relying on water from the reservoirs, while the remaining area depends on rainfall."

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quang, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Nghi Loc district, said: This summer-autumn crop season, Nghi Loc district planted over 4,500 hectares, of which about 2,000 hectares were irrigated by reservoirs. The current difficulty is that the Cam River has dried up, and the communes of Nghi Yen, Nghi Thiet, Nghi Quang, Nghi Dong, etc., are preparing the land but lack water for planting.
Nghi Loc district has directed a halt to production on over 2,500 hectares in water-scarce communes, waiting for rain to cultivate rice while also converting a portion of the area to other crops like corn and beans. Regarding reservoirs, 10 out of 41 reservoirs still have 30-40% of their water capacity remaining, while the rest are depleted. The district has directed water conservation from the beginning of the season to reserve water for the rice flowering stage.
The district also proposed to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to regulate water flow from the Nam Dan tributary to support irrigation for the Nam-Hung-Nghi area; and to implement a river damming project at the Cam Bridge section to "prevent saltwater intrusion and retain freshwater" for rice irrigation.
