"The world has reached a“A major step back from potential nuclear disaster. No more missiles, testing or research. Hostages are back home with their families. Thank you Chairman Kim, our day together was historic,” US President Donald Trump tweeted on June 12.

The comments came after Trump returned from a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island. The summit ended with a joint statement that included four main points: establishing new relations between the two countries "for the peace and prosperity of their peoples," working to build lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, reaffirming the commitments in the Panmunjom Declaration reached between Kim Jong-un and the South Korean president in April, and promoting the search for POW remains.

In a press conference after the summit, Trump said Kim Jong-un was "talented", "patriotic" and "a very honorable negotiator". The US president said he had invited Kim to the White House and that he would also visit Pyongyang at the "appropriate time".
