The TEDI-TRICC-TEDIS Consulting Consortium is conducting a pre-feasibility study on the North-South high-speed railway project, expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport in September and to the Government by the end of the year.

The newly built high-speed railway has a gauge of 1435mm, double track, 23 stations, 5 depots for train maintenance and repair. The total length of the line is about 1,542 km, passing through 20 provinces.

According to the consulting consortium, most of the new railway will run parallel to the existing railway, but some sections will be separated depending on the terrain. Specifically, from Ha Tinh to Dong Hoi, the new railway will head towards the sea where the terrain is flatter and can pass through urban areas, while the existing railway goes west. Major economic regions will also consider setting up railway stations.

Instead of going along the mountain pass like the current railway, the consulting unit is studying the option of going through the mountains at Hai Van, Cu Mong Pass, Ca Pass... About 50-60% of the route length will go on overpasses, river bridges, without level crossings with roads like the current railway. The land area occupied is about 50m wide, including the railway and the protection corridor.

The entire North-South high-speed railway is expected to be divided into 4 sections.

Hanoi - Vinh section (282 km): starting point from Hanoi station or Ngoc Hoi station, basically parallel to the current railway, through Phu Xuyen area, crossing National Highway 1A, Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway and going east of the expressway, the route approaches Phu Ly station. Then, the route crosses the current railway, crosses Nam Dinh - Phu Ly road and approaches Nam Dinh station. The route runs south parallel to the current railway, crosses the Perfume River, and approaches Hue city to the west. Hue station is planned to be located in Thuy Xuan ward, about 2km from the current station. From Hue station, the route runs parallel to the current railway, crosses Cau Hai lagoon, passes Chan May economic zone, and crosses Hai Van pass to Da Nang station planned in Hoa Khanh Nam ward, Lien Chieu district, about 6km from the city center and about 4km from Da Nang airport.
