Ronaldo is the first player to score in eight consecutive major tournaments

Ronaldo scored all three goals for Portugal in their opening match of the 2018 World Cup against Spain. His opening goal from the penalty spot in the fourth minute made him only the fourth player in history to score in four World Cups, after Pele (Brazil), Uwe Seeler (Germany) and Miroslav Klose (Germany).

Ronaldo scored a goal at the 2006 World Cup, sealing a 2-0 win for Portugal over Iran. At the 2010 World Cup, he scored a goal in a 7-0 win over North Korea. At the 2014 World Cup, he also scored a goal in a 2-1 win over Ghana.

Ronaldo's hat-trick against Spain meant he scored more than one goal in a World Cup for the first time.

This impressive form also helped Ronaldo become the first player in history to score in eight consecutive major tournaments at the national team level. The Real striker participated in the Euro 2004, 2008, 2012, 2006 and the World Cup 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and scored in all of them.

Ronaldo's three goals against Spain took his tally for Portugal to 84 in 151 appearances. It was the 51st hat-trick of his career and the 51st hat-trick in World Cup history.

Ronaldo also became the first player in World Cup history to score a hat-trick against Spain.

Costa scores first goal determined by VAR at World Cup

This year's tournament in Russia is the first World Cup where FIFA has deployed video assistant referee (VAR) technology. This technology is used in cases where the referee is unsure about a certain situation. FIFA allows VAR to intervene in four cases: goals, penalties, red cards or the referee misidentifies a player.
