While football fans around the world eagerly watch each World Cup match on screen, Vietnamese students studying in Russia are admired more than ever by their friends back home when they get to witness the biggest football tournament on the planet.

World Cup 2018 - not only is it the first time Russia has won the right to host the World Cup, but it is also the first time it has taken place in Eastern Europe, so Vietnamese students studying in Russia cannot help but join in that historic atmosphere.

Dong Minh Phan (studying for a master's degree at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia) said that the World Cup Finals take place in the summer, when universities are on break, so many international students have gone on vacation or returned home.

"Most Vietnamese students studying abroad are excited about the World Cup, but not everyone can buy tickets to the stadium. My friends and I are the same. Each person will choose their favorite match and try to get the cheapest tickets in the least convenient seats to get into the stadium, but most of the young Vietnamese people will go to the Fanzone to enjoy the World Cup for free."

Young Vietnamese people cheer for the Russian team enthusiastically because to them, Russia is like a second homeland.

In the opening match, when the Russian team "destroyed" the Saudi Arabian team, the Vietnamese students who witnessed it were just as moved and happy as the team from their home country.

"Everyone finished the exam so we had a lot of free time. Russia dominated the away team with a score of 5-0 so my friends and I were just as happy as if Vietnam had won. We also held the Russian flag and joined in the celebration. In general, everyone was very excited," Dong Minh Phan said excitedly.

The Russian flag was raised high as the national team had a "destructive" 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Vietnamese international students confided that they often quickly choose to go to the "Sparrow Hill" area - the area for fans, with 4-5 large screens to enjoy the World Cup atmosphere without spending money because everyone is a student and wants to save money.

In addition, some Vietnamese international students also work as tour guides, sell World Cup promotional money... to earn extra income.

The images capturing the passionate moments on the field and in the stands at the "hot pot" of World Cup of Vietnamese students were shared on social networks, making their friends back home extremely admire and jealous. This atmosphere will continue to be hot with Vietnamese students in Russia throughout the 2018 World Cup season.
