German weekly Der Spiegel has published an apology to the Russian football team after the Russian players secured a ticket to the 1/8 round of the World Cup. In the second round match, the Russian boys defeated their opponents Egypt with a score of 3: 1.

Earlier, German journalists spoke negatively about the prospects of the World Cup hosts. After Russia won 5:0 in the opening match of the World Cup against Saudi Arabia, the German weekly published an article with a hint of irony: "Russia will not go further anyway." Now the journalists admit that they clearly underestimated Stanislav Cherchesov's students.

"Forgive us, Russia, we were wrong" — the headline of the article reads. After the second round match, everything turned out differently: Russia was almost on the verge of reaching the round of 16. This changed our whole outlook. However, in the playoffs, the Russian team will have a tough time facing Spain or Portugal. Russia is unlikely to overcome one of these teams. But we were also skeptical about the Russian team's abilities" — Der Spiegel writes.
