Argentina squeezed through a narrow gap to reach the round of 16. |
In terms of spirit, Argentina is currently more excited than France after escaping danger. However, the European team is considered to have a much better depth. Not to mention, almost the entire French starting lineup is at its best physical condition after being given a rest in the final match against Denmark. With this advantage, France is considered to have a better chance of winning to get a ticket to the quarterfinals.
The top contenders for the title, Brazil, will face Mexico, a familiar opponent. Mexico has shown how difficult it is to face big teams (beating Germany) and the North Central American representative will certainly want to continue to create surprises. However, Brazil is not Germany, because the Selecao is showing very impressive form, able to adapt to many different playing styles of the opponent. With stars in high form like Neymar, Phillippe Coutinho, the Samba dancers will likely continue to dance to get a ticket to the next round.
Spain is highly rated in the ability to continue.
Another team that is also highly rated for the championship, Spain, will face an even easier challenge, which is the host Russia. Apart from the home field advantage, the "Russian Bear" has no points that can be compared to the 2010 World Champion. Although the playing style has not been really good under new coach Fernando Hierro, but with extensive experience, La Roja is completely capable of winning, even winning big to get a ticket to the round of 16.
Uruguay and Portugal are also a match worth waiting for. Uruguay is a team with a balanced squad and disciplined playing style. They are one of three teams (along with Croatia and Belgium) that have won all their group games and have not conceded any goals. As for Portugal, the European representative still relies too much on Cristiano Ronaldo's ability to shine. Once Ronaldo is locked down, the Seleccao becomes mediocre and surely the central defender duo who know Ronaldo well, Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, know how to silence the 33-year-old player.
The last representatives of the round of 16, Belgium and England, also face not too difficult challenges. The Red Devils of Europe, who are the top team in Group H, only have to face Japan, the last representative of Asia. In terms of strength, Belgium is considered to be superior to Japan and with a squad of stars at the peak of their careers, it would not be surprising if they won tickets to the quarterfinals. As for England, they will face Colombia, a team in the Top 8 of the 2014 World Cup. However, the Three Lions are still far superior to their opponents in terms of squad quality. As long as they play at their best, Harry Kane and his teammates are fully capable of winning tickets to the next round.
The dark horse Croatia will face Denmark in the round of 16, a challenge that is probably not too difficult given the performance of the Nordic team since the beginning of the World Cup. Perhaps, a ticket to the next round will be reserved for the plaid team. Meanwhile, the final match of the round of 16 is a competition between two European representatives, Sweden and Switzerland. This is a fairly balanced match, the winner will probably be the one who knows how to seize the opportunity better and in this regard, Sweden is the dominant team.
