The judges said the famous heritage site had suffered irreparable damage. The white marble from which the Taj Mahal was built had become mouldy and cracked over more than 350 years, while the government had done nothing to preserve the unique mausoleum.
In a letter to the Indian government, the judges gave three options to resolve the issue: close the Taj Mahal, demolish it or restore it.
The country's authorities have promised to look into the situation and announced that the Indian Technical University has taken up the task of addressing the issue and will present a corresponding plan in the next four months.
