According to Ms. Nielsen, US intelligence agencies have seen "a persistent and aggressive effort by Russia to use social media and inflammatory rhetoric to sow discord and divide the American people, although not necessarily focused on a specific policy or political campaign."
The secretary said that US intelligence agencies said there was "continuous cyber activation with malicious speech and comments from various figures against the US election infrastructure".
"There is no doubt that adversaries and non-state actors continue to view elections as a target for cyber campaigns and influence operations," the head of the US Department of Homeland Security was quoted by ABC 6 as saying.
