(Baonghean.vn) - Due to the impact of floods, in Con Cuong district, dozens of hectares of green vegetables were flooded, the damage level was almost 100%. This situation led to a limited supply of green vegetables, prices increased 2-3 times.

Every year, green vegetable production in Con Cuong district supplies a large amount to the market in the district as well as some neighboring districts. However, after recent floods, vegetables were submerged, causing almost complete damage. Dozens of households in large vegetable growing areas in localities such as Tien Thanh, Quyet Tien, Vinh Hoan villages... could not save their vegetables.

Ms. Tran Thi Huong, Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune said: On an area of 3 sao, every year the family grows vegetables and tubers such as cucumbers, mustard greens, bitter melons, cabbages, eggplants. From growing vegetables, the family has an annual income of over 100 million VND. At this time last year, the family had to mobilize labor to harvest bitter melons and mustard greens in time to sell to traders. But this year, the storms came early, causing this area to be flooded, with estimated damage of over 30 million VND. Now that the water has receded, my family has not been able to prepare the land to replant because the soil is soft and waterlogged.

Due to the scarcity of green vegetables, although she could only collect a few leftover vegetables, the price doubled. For example, basil, which she usually bought from traders for 20-25 thousand VND/kg, has now increased to 45-50 thousand VND/kg.

Mr. Lo Hong Minh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Chi Khe commune shared: Chi Khe is a locality with a tradition of producing commercial vegetables, the amount of vegetables supplied mainly to the market in the district. However, this year the weather has been complicated, local green vegetables have been lost, people have suffered heavy losses. To plant the new crop, farmers have to wait for a stable source of land, because now, the land is still soft due to flooding."

The scarcity of green vegetables has also caused vegetable prices in the district to increase sharply. Surveys at the central market as well as some local markets at this time show that vegetable prices have doubled, even tripled compared to normal days. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly, a trader at Con Cuong market, said: "Currently, many types of vegetables have increased many times, such as bitter melon at 25,000 VND/kg, herbs at 70,000 VND/kg, green onions at 50,000 VND/kg... Normally, those vegetables cost around 10,000-15,000 VND/kg. Although expensive, they are also in short supply. Water spinach alone has been priced at 6,000-7,000 VND/bunch these days, but there are none to sell."

According to Ms. Ly, the reason why vegetable prices have been pushed up in the past few days is because suppliers have been damaged after storms and floods, so supplies are scarce. In addition, some vegetables and tubers imported from Da Lat, China such as cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, etc. have also increased in price due to high transportation costs.

Currently, the large vegetable farms in the province as well as in Con Cuong district need some time to restore and replant green vegetables if the weather is favorable. Therefore, the current price hike of green vegetables will continue for a while.
