Modern petanque was born in 1907 in Ciotat, Provence, southern France. Then this sport spread to Western European countries as well as all French colonies in Africa, the South Pacific. Over the past decade, in some Eastern European countries, in Eastern European and Asian countries, especially Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Japan, Singapore, many people play this sport.

The World Petanque Championship was first held in 1959. The Vietnamese sports team competed in this sport for the first time at the 21st SEA Games.
