Child patient dies because nurse uses medicine incorrectly

The nurse injected half a tube of Kaliclorid directly into the 8-month-old baby's vein instead of orally as prescribed by the doctor.

On August 9, Dong Anh District Police (Hanoi) announced that they had just issued a decision to initiate a case to investigate the crime.Violation of regulations on medical examination and treatmentoccurred at Dong Anh General Hospital.

According to the police, at around 5:50 p.m. on January 15, the emergency department of Dong Anh General Hospital received an 8-month-old boy with a high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. After being given a fever-reducing compress and medication, the boy was transferred to the pediatric department.

Here, the boy was diagnosed with acute diarrhea, dehydration, acute pharyngitis, congenital heart disease, and a poor prognosis.Nurse Hoang Thu Trang was then ordered by the doctor to take blood for testing and give the baby half a tube of Kaliclorid orally.

However, when carrying out the order, nurse Trang injected half of the Kaliclorid tube directly into the vein, causing the child to have symptoms of body stiffness, purple lips, and rapid heartbeat. When the family reported the abnormality, the doctor came to the emergency room,monitoring acute potassium poisoning...

The baby was taken to the emergency room at Xanh Pon Hospital and the National Children's Hospital. At around 7:30 p.m. on January 23, the baby died.

The Dong Anh General Hospital's professional council later concluded that the nurse had violated professional procedures in using the drug. The child was prescribed oral potassium, but the nurse administered it intravenously.

Nurse Trang was suspended from work for 30 days.
