After many hours of emergency efforts, the children showed signs of recovery but only lasted for more than a day. On August 12, due to the lack of treatment, the family completed the procedures to bring Mai Huy home for burial. Currently, Duy Nam is still in a coma due to multiple organ failure, with a poor prognosis.

Dr. Hoang Nam, Vice Principal of Hong Duc University, confirmed that the two boys had an accident while bathing in a water hole on the school campus. "This is an unfortunate incident," Dr. Nam said, adding that school leaders had visited and encouraged the boys' families.

According to Mr. Nam, at noon on August 10, a group of children from Thanh Mai village went from the back gate of the school to the soccer field to play. The children then went down to the pond to cool off but fell into deep water and could not get out. The group of friends who were with them quickly ran back to the village to inform their relatives. When adults found and brought them to shore, the two children had stopped breathing.

After the tragic drowning incident, Hong Duc University leaders installed warning signs.

The location of the victims' accident was a pond about 2 meters deep and 150 meters wide.2, without fences or warning signs. According to the leaders of Hong Duc school, this water hole has existed for many years but was recently renovated by the Center for Applied Science and Technology Research (under Hong Duc University) to become a place to store water for watering the school's green plants.

Immediately after the drowning incident, Hong Duc University installed danger warning signs.
