Mr. Peskov - press secretary of the head of the Russian state said that Mr. Putin and Ms. Merkel discussed bilateral relations, and also noted the growth of trade turnover between Russia and Germany. The leaders of the two countries opposed the politicization of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.

According to Peskov, Mr Putin and Ms Merkel agreed that the project was commercially beneficial and must be protected against attacks.

Among other issues on the agenda is the settlement of the Syrian conflict. "President Putin noted the gradual return of refugees and called on European countries to contribute to making this process irreversible," Peskov said.

The talks between President Putin and Chancellor Merkel took place on the evening of August 18 at the German government residence Mezeberg, but the parties did not aim to reach an agreement.
