According to the US President, he is ready to consider removing restrictive measures against Russia, if Moscow takes steps to work together with Washington on issues such as Syria and Ukraine.
For various reasons, the United States has imposed many sanctions against Russia. Some of them were imposed by order of the President and he has the right to lift them, but other sanctions were passed by law of Congress and cannot be lifted without the consent of the legislature.
On August 8, the US government announced a new package of sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons in Salisbury in March against former GRU officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, according to British officials. The new US sanctions will take effect on August 22.
