(Baonghean.vn) - Having had two previous convictions for drug-related crimes, Chien still "returned to his old ways". This time, Chien also dragged his wife into trouble with the law, leaving behind three young children.

On the morning of August 31, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened a first-instance criminal trial of the defendants Nguyen Xuan Chien (born in 1981), Nguyen Thi Vinh (born in 1981, both residing in Khanh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district) and Vo Van Ha (born in 1987, also known as Khoi, residing in Dien Loi commune, Dien Chau district) for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking".

According to the investigation documents, while being detained at the Quang Binh Provincial Police Detention Center, Nguyen Xuan Chien brought two phones into his cell. Chien contacted Tran My Chien to discuss buying drugs and she agreed to buy 10 packets of pink heroin each time.

Chien then contacted a Laotian man named Po (who had previously sold drugs to Chien) and he agreed. After contacting the drug seller and buyer, Chien called his wife Nguyen Thi Vinh and said: “Can I ask you for a favor?”. After learning that her husband intended to buy and sell drugs, Vinh said: “Your sentence is still long, aren’t you afraid? Now let’s accumulate virtue to have a son.”

On the morning of July 30, 2017, Chien contacted Vo Van Ha to discuss hiring him to go to Cau Treo Border Gate (Huong Son District, Ha Tinh) to deliver drugs to a Lao man. Ha agreed.

When everything was ready, Chien called Vinh and said, “When Khoi comes to get the money, give him $12,000 and VND3 million to pay the fine.” Although her husband said so, Vinh understood that it was money to buy drugs. That afternoon, Ha went to the pre-arranged location to get the money from Chien’s wife.

After that, Ha rented a car to go to the meeting point to get a black bag containing 3 cylindrical blocks of synthetic drugs weighing 2084.17 grams and 1 heroin cake weighing 353.11 grams. After the transaction, Ha turned the car around and returned. On the way back, when passing through Son Tay commune (Huong Son district), he was arrested by the authorities. Although at that time, Ha lowered the car window and threw the drugs out to bury them, he was discovered by the authorities.

Searching Nguyen Thi Vinh's house and the land managed by the couple, the Nghe An Provincial Police Investigation Agency discovered a newly dug-up plot of land with suspicious signs. During the inspection, the investigation team discovered an electronic scale, 2 mobile phones, a white potylene bag containing a brownish-white crystalline substance, and 7 identical white potylene packages containing a white crystalline substance. During the investigation, Chien confessed that the crystalline substance seized by the authorities was Chien's to sell to others before being arrested by Quang Binh Provincial Police.

According to the conclusion of the Criminal Techniques Department of Nghe An Provincial Police, the white crystalline substance sample seized in the land of Chien and Vinh's couple was synthetic drugs, weighing 5.83 grams.

At court, defendant Ha appeared to be abnormal, unable to control his behavior, and kept talking nonsense. Defendant Ha also answered questions from the panel of judges. To ensure the defendant's rights, the panel of judges temporarily adjourned the trial and invited a doctor from the Provincial Police Detention Center to visit and check Ha's health.

After the examination, the doctor announced that the health indicators of the defendant Vo Van Ha were normal. However, Ha had a history of epilepsy and high blood pressure. To ensure the rights of the defendant as well as to ensure the trial was conducted objectively, the panel of judges decided to postpone the trial.

It is known that Chien has 2 previous convictions. In 2013, Chien was sentenced by the Anh Son District People's Court to 30 months in prison for "Illegal possession of narcotics". In August 2017, Chien was sentenced by the Da Nang High People's Court to 19 years in prison for "Illegal transportation of narcotics".
