Nghe An: First successful surgery for complete carotid artery occlusion
(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, Nghe An General Hospital successfully performed vascular surgery, re-circulating blood flow and saving the life of patient Nguyen Hanh Phuc (52 years old, Hung Nguyen).
On September 13, Nghe An General Hospital admitted patient Nguyen Hanh Phuc in a state of weakness on the right side of the body, high blood pressure, and persistent headache. Ultrasound and CT scan showed that the patient had a complete blockage of the left common carotid artery, extending 11 cm, on the basis of an old cerebral infarction.

Dr. Pham Van Chung - Deputy Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery said: "The patient's common carotid artery is severely blocked, so endovascular intervention to place a stent is not possible, because the atherosclerotic plaque in the artery can move up, causing a cerebral infarction, leading to the risk of stroke for the patient.
As the patient could not undergo endarterectomy in the carotid artery, we therefore chose to perform a bypass from the subclavian artery to the left common carotid artery using an autologous saphenous vein taken from the patient's thigh.
Carotid artery occlusion surgery is the pinnacle of vascular surgery, because it is not simply a manipulation of blood vessels, but also involves the assessment of the brain's adaptation to ischemia, and monitoring methods as well as measures to limit cerebral ischemia during surgery. Currently, only a few major centers/hospitals in the country can perform this surgery.
