Mount Paektu, located on the northern border with China, is the highest mountain on the Korean peninsula.

At the first inter-Korean summit in April 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in was invited by leader Kim Jong-un to visit Mount Paektu. However, he declined the offer, saying he hoped his visit to the mountain would start from the heart of North Korea. What Moon wanted was to improve relations between South Korea and North Korea to a “new level,” where any South Korean could visit any mountain in North Korea.

It is expected that during the mountain climb, the two leaders will continue to discuss issues such as agreeing to reduce military tensions, strengthen trust and prevent unexpected conflicts in the demilitarized zone.

In the September joint statement after the 3rd Summit, the two countries' defense ministers signed a series of military agreements, pledging not to use force under any circumstances, completely eliminating the risk of war.
