Silicone braces of unknown origin can easily cause gum inflammation and affect the shaping and development of teeth in young children.

The market currently offers many types of silicone orthodontic braces suitable for children aged 5-12. The product is advertised as being able to correct crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, or protruding teeth, prevent the risk of dental deformities, and promote harmonious jaw bone development. Parents only need 1-2 minutes to attach the braces to their child's teeth before bedtime, following the instructions, and remove them the next morning. The product is also advertised as allowing young children to have straight teeth for only 2-3 months. There are larger sizes for adults, requiring 6-8 months of use for straight teeth.

The price of a single orthodontic brace sold on the open market ranges from 300,000 to 600,000 VND, with some stores offering discounts as low as 199,000 VND. Meanwhile, the price at dental clinics ranges from 20,000 to 60 million VND per brace.

Dr. Pham Nhu Hai, from the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at Vietnam-Cuba Hospital, stated that, in principle, braces will improve the appearance of teeth and face, and enhance chewing skills. However, orthodontic treatment must be performed under the supervision of a dentist. "Buying braces and straightening teeth without a dentist is very dangerous, especially for young children whose teeth are still developing," Dr. Hai said.

According to Dr. Hai, braces sold on the market without clear origin and manufacturing materials can easily cause gum inflammation in young children. If worn by inexperienced or uninformed individuals, and for extended periods without dental supervision, it can lead to exposed tooth roots, pulpitis, and loose teeth. Improperly worn braces can affect the development of children's teeth and cause jaw misalignment. In the long term, those who wear braces are more prone to problems such as difficulty chewing, pain, and premature tooth loss.

Typically, orthodontic treatment involves significant costs and a 2-3 year treatment period to achieve straight, beautiful teeth. This doesn't even include the discomfort and pain associated with wearing braces.

The doctor advises:

ButNever underestimate the importance of oral health. Braces should only be worn when absolutely necessary and should be done at reputable dental clinics.

- Have regular dental checkups and brush your teeth as directed. It's best to limit chewy and hard foods.

- Do not buy products sold haphazardly on the market. If you must use them, they must be inspected and approved by a dentist.

- Parents should take their 7-8 year old children to the dentist for examination and consultation. Avoid using functional appliances of unknown origin, lacking clinical evidence, and supplied by people without professional expertise.
