Cohabiting couple killed creditor, disposed of body and received death penalty and life imprisonment

On the morning of September 29, at the first instance trial, the People's Court of Da Nang City sentenced Nguyen Hung Dung (50 years old) to death, and his wife Le Thi Phuong Oanh (49 years old), both residing in Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District, to life in prison for murder and robbery. The mobile trial was held at apartment building C2, Duong Van Nga Street, Group 72C, Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang City.

According to the indictment, Dung and Oanh borrowed 170 million VND from Ms. Van Thi Thanh Nga (56 years old), residing at 26 Quang Trung, Thach Thang ward, Hai Chau district, Da Nang city, for spending and living expenses.

Due to his inability to pay his debt, on the evening of June 19, in room 612, apartment building C2, Building C, group 72C, Nai Hien Dong ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang city, Dung discussed with his wife about killing Mrs. Nga to escape the debt. At 6:00 a.m. the next morning, Oanh texted Mrs. Nga to lure her to the house and then the couple used a rope to strangle Mrs. Nga to death.

After searching Mrs. Nga's handbag and taking 5.6 million VND and 3 phones, Dung dragged Mrs. Nga's body close to the closet and covered it with a cloth. The couple threw the victim's belongings into the apartment's trash can and then took Mrs. Nga's motorbike to hide at the Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in Ngu Hanh Son district.

Next, Dung and Oanh used black plastic to cover the victim's head, put her in a styrofoam box, and drove her to Man Quang bridge, Tho Quang ward, and dumped her body into the Han river.

Nguyen Hung Dung bowed his head and admitted his guilt.
