Xelil Şirvan, a commander of the Kurdish Peshmerga militia, said the military base was being used as a launching pad for operations against Islamic State (IS) militants in eastern Syria.
According to Xelil Şirvan, the new US military base is located in the city of Al-Qa'im in Anbar province, on the banks of the Euphrates River, in northwestern Iraq and bordering Syria.
The Pentagon is increasing its military presence in the Syria-Iraq border region, which is why the Iraqi government is deploying troops to Al-Qa'im to defend the area.
A spokesman for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) added that the new base was used to launch an SDF operation earlier this month to hunt down remaining ISIS fighters in the ISIS stronghold of Hajin province in eastern Syria.
The US military base is located on the strategic border route connecting the city of Al-Qa'im with the city of Abu Kamal (Syria), where ISIS was defeated and forced to retreat in early November 2017.
