Japan's government members have resigned so Prime Minister Shinzo Abe can form a new cabinet after winning the election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's president, Kyodo news agency said.

After Mr Abe accepts the resignations of all members of his third cabinet since he was elected prime minister in 2012, he will begin forming a new cabinet.

Of the 18 ministers, only a third, ministers and politicians closest to the prime minister, are expected to retain their posts.
