Haiti: At least 10 people killed after 5.9 magnitude earthquake

On October 7, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in northern Haiti, killing at least 10 people and injuring many others.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had an epicenter of about 11.7 km deep, located nearly 20 km west-northwest of Haiti's port city of Port-de-Paix.

According to the Haitian Civil Protection Agency, many people were injured and many houses and buildings were destroyed in the Port-de-Paix area of ​​Gros Morne, Chansolme and Turtle Island. Among the damaged structures was the Saint-Michel Church in Plaisance. The source said many injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment.The earthquake's tremors were also felt in the capital Port-au-Prince and in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Haiti is located in an earthquake-prone area. In 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake devastated parts of the capital Port-au-Prince, killing 300,000 people.
