Rare: 8cm long toothpick inside 9 year old boy's body
(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of October 16, Nghe An Orthopedic Trauma Hospital successfully performed surgery on a rare case of child patient Ngo Sy Quan (9 years old) in Dien Ky, Dien Chau.
On October 12, 2018, patient Ngo Sy Quan was admitted to the hospital with an unusual mass, severe pain in the buttocks, and difficulty walking. It is known that the patient had been examined at several medical facilities but after many days, the cause was still not discovered.
At the Upper Limb Department - Nghe An Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, with the examination of highly specialized and experienced doctors and the application of modern equipment, the patient was found to have a foreign object in the right buttock area.
However, the difficulty is that the patient does not remember how the injury occurred, has no history of trauma, and there are no signs of injury on the skin. The foreign body is not radiopaque, so determining its location and size by X-ray or C-ARM during surgery is very difficult.

Determining the location and size of foreign objects by X-ray is very difficult. |
Doctor Nguyen Duy Quyet - Head of the Upper Limb Department - who directly performed the surgery on the patient said: This is a rare case. For this case, a thorough examination is required, combining many means: Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and clinical examination to determine if there is a foreign object deep in the gluteal muscle mass.
The foreign object is located quite deep below the skin surface, has no entry point, and is not visible on the skin, so the surgery is quite difficult. It requires a team of highly skilled and experienced doctors and technicians, along with modern and complete operating room equipment; to meet the requirements of the surgery.
After about 1 hour of surgery, doctors removed a foreign object, a sharp toothpick (about 8cm) deep in the patient's gluteal muscle.

According to Dr. Quyet, in this case, if not operated on promptly, it is very dangerous; the risk of infection is very high, can cause abscesses in the gluteal muscles, gradually progressing can cause necrosis and damage to blood vessels and nerves.
For children after trauma, or with unusual health symptoms, parents need to take their children to a specialist for timely examination.
