Taiwanese prosecutors announced they will prosecute two Vietnamese workers at a water treatment plant in Taichung City for killing and cooking dogs.

SheetTaipei TimesThe Taichung City Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office received a call reporting a dog had been killed on the evening of October 25. Animal protection officials and police then raided a dormitory for workers at a water treatment plant.

In the kitchen of the apartment building, they found a dog’s head in a plastic bag and 17 Vietnamese workers eating stewed dog meat. The authorities also found three dogs chained in the apartment building and rescued them. Police believe they were stray dogs captured by Vietnamese workers for meat.

Taichung prosecutors and a team of forensic experts examined the 17 workers to find out who killed the dogs. They found many blood stains on the body of a woman surnamed Nguyen (36 years old).

However, she only admitted to cooking the dog meat and confirmed that a male worker named Giap (52 years old) was the one who killed the dog. Based on the evidence collected, prosecutors said they would prosecute the two Vietnamese workers.

According to Taiwan's Animal Protection Act, killing a dog or cat can result in up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of NT$2 million (over VND1.5 billion), while eating dog or cat meat can result in a fine of NT$250,000.
