Spanish prosecutors are seeking a 25-year prison sentence for former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras for rebellion and misuse of public funds. It is the longest sentence ever imposed on separatist leaders who pushed for the region’s illegal independence referendum last year. The trial of the former Catalan leaders is expected to begin in early 2019.

In an indictment released on November 2, Spain’s Attorney General’s Office accused Mr Junqueras of playing a central role in the illegal referendum on Catalonia’s independence from the central government in Madrid, which sparked Spain’s worst political crisis in four decades.

Bloomberg News reported that the US government has approved eight countries, including two close allies, South Korea and Japan, along with India, to continue buying crude oil from Iran after US sanctions on the Gulf country's crude oil exports officially took effect on November 4. Japan's cabinet proposes wider opening to foreign workers

On November 2, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet approved a draft law aimed at attracting more foreign workers to sectors facing labor shortages in the country.

The proposed amendments will create two new visa categories for foreigners working in sectors facing labour shortages.

The first type is for workers with certain skills and Japanese language proficiency, who are allowed to stay in the country for up to 5 years, but are not allowed to bring their families along.

The second category is for more skilled workers who can bring their families along and eventually be granted residency.

"We have not been able to download data from the black box yet because some parts are broken," Haryo Satmiko, vice chairman of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, told Reuters.Reutersabout the black box recording flight parameters that Indonesian rescue forces found from where the Lion Air Boeing 737 Max plane carrying 189 people crashed into the Java Sea on October 29.

Satimiko said Indonesian authorities were waiting for advice from US experts or Boeing on how to handle the black box.
