Little hope for meaningful summit between Russian and US leaders in Paris

(Baonghean.vn) - On November 12, Mr. Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of the Global Affairs newspaper (Russia), commented that the ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I in Paris (France) is only a diplomatic ceremonial event, therefore it does not create a foundation for dialogue between world leaders.

“Since this is a social event, no meaningful meeting is likely to take place,” said Mr. Lukyanov, who is also the research director of the Development and Support Fund at the Valdai Discussion Club.

In my view, no one had high hopes for this meeting, except for overzealous analysts in some media outlets. This is a purely diplomatic celebration, intended to give French President Emmanuel Macron the first opportunity to speak. He has prepared carefully for the speech, including arranging the Paris Peace Forum in parallel with the memorial service."

Referring to the role of the media, which has raised hopes of a meeting between world leaders on the sidelines of the Paris event for no particular reason, Mr. Lukyanov said that "the irony here is that the media portrays a handshake and a 30-second exchange on the way to the conference table as a real meeting, and if that were the case, everyone would have a meeting with someone else."

“There was clearly no chance (of having serious conversations). This is another example of reality and thinking being two completely different things,” the expert pointed out.
