Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to have a good relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr. Putin has proposed to mediate the recent tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria. The two leaders have also had many phone calls, discussing joint efforts to ensure security in the border area between Israel and Syria.

Russia's proposal comes amid the stalled Middle East peace process, especially after US President Donald Trump announced his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the relocation of the US Embassy to the holy city on May 14. Palestine immediately rejected the US's mediating role in the Middle East peace negotiations./.
