Bringing guava from the garden to the field, Nam Dan farmers earn a good income.
(Baonghean.vn) - Realizing the great potential of growing fruit trees in the fields through visiting some localities across the country, some households in Nam Anh and Nam Xuan communes, Nam Dan district have brought guava trees from their gardens to the fields, and are now harvesting, showing high economic efficiency.
Ms. Ho Thi Thuan's family in hamlet 5, Nam Anh commune (Nam Dan) has 8 sao of rice fields, previously specializing in growing crops, but due to unstable markets, they often fall into a situation of good harvests and low prices.
In early 2018, Ms. Thuan decided to invest in renovating and planting nearly 300 Taiwanese guava trees. At first, there were many difficulties because the guava trees were infested with pests and diseases. Later, with the help of long-time guava growers and practical experience, Ms. Thuan's family's guava garden gradually became full of fruit.

Seeing the effectiveness of guava cultivation during a visit to Hung Yen province, Mr. Vo Van Danh's family in hamlet 8, Nam Xuan commune also switched to growing Taiwanese guava trees on nearly 2 hectares of rice fields. After only 4 months, the guava tree bore fruit.
According to Mr. Danh, for the tree to grow and produce quality fruit, it is necessary to adjust the height of the tree to more than 2m to nourish the trunk, prune the branches and create a shape for the tree to grow in balance, convenient for care, harvesting and increase the ability to resist falling during the rainy and stormy season.
"The advantage is that this guava variety can be harvested all year round, with many fruits, sweet, crunchy, few seeds, favored by customers, and easy to sell... In the early stages, we harvested 2 batches per month, now we harvest 3-4 batches per week; the purchase price at the garden is from 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg" - Mr. Danh said.

After 1 year of growing guava in the fields, farmers confirmed that growing guava trees is quite suitable for the soil and climate conditions in Nam Dan. To produce high yielding guava, in addition to ensuring irrigation water, it is necessary to use manure, especially chicken manure, combined with regular gardening, mounding, pruning; it is necessary to cover the fruit with plastic bags, and immediately remove fruit infected with pests, fruit flies and butterflies.
Mr. Ho Dinh Thang - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nam Dan district said:Implementing the restructuring of the agricultural sector, increasing the value per unit area, the district directed some communes to convert the highland areas with limited water resources for vegetable and rice production to fruit tree cultivation. Through the process, some crops have reached the harvest time such as guava, orange, grapefruit. In particular, for guava, the harvest time is quite fast, the consumption market is large. Moving forward, the district will direct guava production areas to develop a clean guava process, according to VietGAP.
